Cup - committee of union and progress (1908,1913) Edyptian nationalism came in response to foreign control of their country. Turkish nationalism rose also b/c of external pressure on their society. Also reaction to successionist movements in the empire. Rulers of the ottoman state embraced turkish nationalism after other ideologies failed to hold state toghether like liberal ottomanism and pan-islam. Established parlaiment voters men of property from different provinces. Hoped lo would be key for internal stability. Euro powers would intervene to protect interests of non-muslim ppl. Advocates hoped the constitution would reduce the pretext. 1st time they had to issue official language, was turkish obvs. Btwn 1876-1878 ottoman serbs fought serb and bulgarian nationalists (who were helped by russia) Lost most of remaining part of europe, romania, bosnia-herzogovina defacto independence. Had to have foreign intervention to stop russians from marching on istanbul. Turned against constituion in 1878 and tried to strengthen and preserve the remaining empire.
