Document Summary

Disability studies is the study of the normative order of our culture: the social, political, historical, economic context of disability and disablement. By studying the physical features of a classroom, we can determine what the school assumes who a typical student is and what the cultural values are. Disability studies, studies the meaning of disability and the material consequences of this meaning in our everyday lives. Disability studies is a way to study how ableism intersects with other forms of oppression. Disability studies is rooted in community activism. Disability studies offers us a way to think about how disability is made and re-made by us. Disability studies is a space for desiring disability, for living with and in disability, for creating community and coalitions and for imagining new ways of being together. Disability appears and disappears depending on our environment and situations. The label of disability justifies the oppression of all sorts of different minds and bodies.
