Nhpd is a part of health canada to ensure that nhps aren"t contaminated with drugs, heavy metals, or bacteria, and to create a framework for creating safe dietary supplements for. There may not be strong scientific evidence to supports its use but it doesn"t mean that the product doesn"t work. The logic behind this is that if there has a problem with that particular product in terms of being harmful, then we probably would have noticed by now, although not a guarantee. This is a document that lists well-known nhp. It provides manufacturers with a certain amount of scientific evidence, what doses are acceptable, what claims can be made, etc. If a manufacturer wants to get approval for a product, they can follow the guidelines in the compendium. If they want to market a product for use that is beyond what is in the compendium, then they have to provide more scientific evidence.
