Yes, perceived personal agency predicted judgments of responsibility, punishment and prison time for americans - but not for chinese participants. Are the judgments of people inn the us and china differently affected by information about agency vs consequences. Us participants were more affected by the agency manipulation (eg he chose to vs forced to) compared to chinese participants. Consequence manipulation (eg person killed or not) had no effect on punishment, but did increase chinese responsibility judgments. The extent to which chinese participants were concerned about the consequences of harmful acts predicted their concern about social harmony disruption.
