PHL100Y1 Lecture 18: 18 Nagel
Document Summary
What creates meaning for today is our living of life today. Insigni cance doesn"t necessarily have any connection with meaning. Chains of justi cation in life, and they just end without conclusion sometimes. We don"t need this special end to all our actions and their justi cations. We need to nd meaning within ourself for reasons to do things. In the case of meaning, nagel says no: but these do clue us into something: life is absurd! How does the absurd manifest in normal, ordinary life: a contradiction of circumstance: you"re getting knighted and your pants fall down, or whatever the fuck you fa;;akj. Some people look away in cringe/embarrassment, maybe. Accept that it"s absurd and react in acceptance. What is a wholly absurd life: deeper than an absurd situation; an absurd situation doesn"t mean an absurd life. By extension, your absurd life doesn"t mean philosophical absurdity.
