PHL100Y1 Lecture 29: 29 Hick
Document Summary
Further deconstruction of the problem of evil: distinction between moral evils and non-moral evils. Moral evils: from humans and due to free will: therefore justi ed by the simple free will defence, originates from the evil and culpable incompetence of mankind; human sin. Non-moral evils: things we did not cause at all: defence vs. theodicy. A theodicy does not claim to explain every instance of evil; only defends against the claim that religion is against logic: hidden premise. Consider a world that had no evil: the murderers knife would turn to paper, bullets to thin air, etc. This would require constant miracles: it would just be really strange! There would be no work, no innovation, no science. Would there be any right-ness, courage, virtue? no: would not promote the development of moral qualities. Yes, apparently: what about people who just die and don"t get to build their soul. Perhaps just part of an overall plan .
