Document Summary

Socratic dialogue featuring others: socratic/dialectic method. Asks a lot of questions to prove someone"s beliefs are somehow inconsistent. Book one: thracynakdfas asks if justice is truly always good: glaucon challenges socrates" conclusion that it is. Egoism et al, as rachels discussed: socrates: oh shit! Glaucon: no its cool i think you"re right, but lets gure it out: we all agree being good sucks and being bad is great. We get other things from being good; rewards in the afterlife, etc. If good is better than being bad, that doesn"t automatically mean we want to do it; therefore, don"t give me a relative argument: the challenge to to prove that justice is something i should want. Socrates: it"s easier to examine justice is we look at a city and its function: let"s nd justice at the level of the community and see how it applies to the individual.
