Document Summary

External force: net force applied from outside the system: ftotal = fext + fint. Where fext is the sum of all the external forces and fint is the sum of all the internal forces. According to the newton"s third law, each of the internal forces has an equal but oppositely directed force that itself acts on a particle of the system and is therefore included in the sum fint. Added vectorially, the internal forces therefore cancel in pairs so fint = 0, and the force ftotal is just the net external force applied to the system: fnet ext = macm = m(d2rcm/dt2) (eqn 9. 3) Where fnet ext is the net external force applied to the system and m is the total mass. Center of mass position is an average of the positions of the individual particles, weighted by their masses.
