Document Summary

Freedom is better characterized as freedom from tyranny . The constitution of america makes sure the president is not a tyrant. Liberty of ancients: participatory, direct, public not private liberty , freedom of community self government, freedom is collective, dependent upon a class of people who didn"t engage in, big decisions were on war commerce or even work. Not so much freedom to as freedom from (isaiah berlin) All driven by commerce and private property instead of war. All this for constant is driven by our society. Modern liberty is better both than ancient liberty and pre-modern. We prefer representative to direct government that just leaves us alone to be happy and get rich. But he hedges his best at end of the lecture: even constant beliefs that freedom from is not enough, he contradicted himself, all great thinkers do. They grew what they needed and nothing else. Family life extended family, collective family, big family.
