POL101Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Christopher Hitchens, Aristocracy
Document Summary
An actual, intentional and widespread armed conflict between political communities political communities are either a state or an entity that intends on becoming a state. War can be defined by scale (total - ww2 or limited - gulf wars), methods (targets - industrial, civilian, military, etc. ), services employed (led by a different branch of military), their effects (ex. defeat of napoleon leading to congress of vienna and balance of power, ww2 and establishment of bretton woods institutions) Ww1 led to political re-ordering of europe due to the collapse of ottoman, austro- Hungarian and the rise of the bolsheviks and also led to a highly nationalistic campaign with the goal of ethnic cleansing. *scale is difficult to control because wars are self-perpetuating. War used to be a natural reflex, but until very recently (due to how devastating the last two major wars were) there was no difference between war and commerce, war and religion (profit, piety and politics), etc.
