Lecture 4: rise of the west & marxism. Industrialization began to start in the north west of europe, primarily britain. Because industrialization moved slowly across europe, eastern europe was still an agriculturally based society. The twin revolutions ( 16th - 19th century ) - centuries, agricultural and industrial. Somewhat of a hyperbole, b/c agricultural revolution took time. Industrial revolution - massive changes across europe ex: raw cotton - increased 16 fold in fifty years. Most important of the products - iron - amount of iron processed increased dramatically. Wine, beer, matches, etc - luxuries were being consumed by everyone. Middle class was born - entrepreneur"s became the bourgeoisie society became more complex. 3 social results of the ir : capacity to produce surplus, increasing complexity of division of labour, new forms of social consciousness. Demise of royal absolutism - kings, queens, and nobles loose there status. Parliament over kings - they would become superior.
