POL200Y1 Lecture 2: July 19, 2016 The Leviathan (2)
Document Summary
Hope, the covenant, and the laws of nature. People come into conflict for reputation and honor. State of nature is any condition when there is no common power. Every person is a judge in their own case. There is no justice because nothing can be unjust. Even when there are laws to protect you, you do not trust people. You lock your phone because you don"t trust those who are close to you, not to snoop. Your suspicion that people will steal is the evidence that human beings are terrible. Prevent men from acting in their own interest. You must understand that human beings are inherently selfish and look in their inherent self interest. In augustine the city of man is the city of pride, however, there is redemption to men"s condition (the city of god exists) In aquinas we have a social good -- man is social and political animal. In hobbes man is individualistic and prideful by nature.
