Power is getting what you want, getting others to do what you want. Authority is having legitimacy to getting others to do what you want ( rightfulness ) If it"s something attributional, we can exercise it against others regardless of context: you have lots of certain attributes if you have power. If it"s relational, we can only think about it within certain contexts. Recall, power = the implication is that if you have power, you"re golden: getting what you want, getting others to do what they otherwise wouldn"t (coercion, agenda- setting, persuasion, telling others what is right (authority) With great power comes great responsibility: the limits of power. Challenges of maintaining power: upstarts and alternatives, costs. Power of states, non-states traditional ir focus on states and changes in their power global politics the power of domestic factors, non-state actors: rise of the eu, e-bandits.
