What does this mean: teleological argument: one that proposes that all things are designed and directed towards an end or purpose. (i. e. history builds toward a specific combination - one period builds towards the next. Arguments about the rise/fall of democracy: marx"s argument: teleological argument, primitive communism - slave society - feudalism - capitalism - socialism - Moral arguments: major argument: democracy does not have a record of producing other things we value. Instrumental view - we value democracy because it produces other things we value: moral arguments in favour of democracy are not entirely stupid. Citizens have rights: competition - democracy cannot have a unanimity approach - this creates deadlock. There must be completion in order for democracy to function: minority rights - while the majority wins elections, the minority still has some rights. Fluid minority: a minority that is in the minority on some issues, but in the majority on others.
