Basic features of our system of government summarised. Domain of the legislature (where elected representatives debate and pass laws) Provincially, it is the legislature of legislative assembly. Domain of the independent judiciary, which resolves disputes about the legality of government decisions. In parliamentary regime, parties win elections and form the government by winning seats in the house of commons. Voters vote for candidates running to be their local member of parliament (mp) in their local constituency, or riding. Constituency is known as a seat , mps hold seats in the house of commons. When a party wins 50%+1 of the seats in the house, it forms a majority government. When it doesn"t, we get a minority government. This is a government where the one party in power holds less than 50% of seats. Pm and ministers must be mps, the pm is the leader of the party in power.
