Indeed, many ethnic groups are known by the same name as that of the language they speak. Common to many definitions of sharing culture , the most notable aspect in language. Others highlight the importance of history, often migration and settlement. Ethnicity commonly refers to collectives that share a myth of origin and the most people emphasize ancestry. Ethnicity was used in english language since the mid-14th century. In u. s. it is often employed to refer to those immigrants of non-northern or western. Originally referring to heathens or pagans, it acquired racial characteristics in the 19th century and was widely used in the 20th century. Theoretical approaches to ethnicity: primordialism - the view that ethnic groups are ancient and immemorial kinship groups. Ethnic identities are more fundamental than other types of identity. Ethnic mobilization are motivated by expressive not instrumental needs. Ethnicity is not subject to rational cost/benefit calculations.
