Lecture 13 - international human rights law: part 2. International covenant on civil and political rights (iccpr) articles of importance. Article 6: every human being has the inherent right to life: does not prohibit the death penalty, but has restrictions - no death penalty on pregnant women or criminals under 18. Article 7: no one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman punishment. Article 8: no one shall be held in slavery or servitude. Article 9: core civil liberties: liberty and security of person, freedom from arbitrary arrest or detention. Two ways in which both the international covenants and domestic ones can limit rights. 9(1) (liberty and security of person: general limitations clauses. Canadian charter of rights and freedoms: the ccrf guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.
