POL378H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Welfare, Biomaterial, Dementia
Document Summary
Can be thought of as two concepts describing similar phenomena under later capitalism with strikingly different effects. Debility and debilitation draws our attention to processes through which bodies become harmed, injured, debilitated. Puar uses "disability" to rethink disability and resituate it alongside neoliberalism. Disability is currently being mobilized as an identity to make rights claims. Rights claims are limited because they cannot address the kinds of harms puar points to: work and warning. Limited in terms of pointing us towards the processes that harm maim bodies. Process that"s normalized in the sense that its so everyday, ubiquitous, we don"t see these big processes happening around us all the time. Can happen to somebody as to whether they"re disabled or not. The way bodies become harmed, injured, linking that to ideas about biopolitics. Processes of debilitation, not confined by one location.
