PSL300H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Distal Convoluted Tubule, Paracellular Transport, Prostate Cancer
Document Summary
Underlying cause of wrist facture is osteoporosis bc of the cortisol in his prostate cancer treatment. Hormonal reg of fluid, na+ and k+ balance. We are mostly water, ranging from 50%-65% water. Ideal is a balance where nothing is lost, no net loss or gain. Basically a big filtration system - dirty blood via artery, clean blood via vein. Fluid filtered out of plasma enters the ensuing tubules. Material is added and taken away from fluid throughout this. Blood supply and capillaries are widespread here to facilitate the transfer. Blood and tubule does not cross - diffuses over. 1 m nephrons (the tubules) filtering blood 24x7 (in one kidney) Tubules fine tune materials for excretion & reabsorption. Filters 180l per day = total blood x 20-25 times. Disposes of metabolites: urea, excess glucose & ions, hormones, etc. Body fluids osmolarity: 300mosm (solute conc = isotonic) (mosm = miliosmols)
