Document Summary
Daily values and surface area: saliva secretions, stomach secretions, pancreatic secretions, liver and gallbladder secretions, small intestine hormone secretion. Recall motility patterns in the stomach, intestine (segmentation), etc. Secretion is material into the gi tract but also secretion of things like paracrine factors or hormones to influence cells for a response. You have a lot of material being emptied into gi tract from the specialized epithelial cells and the accessory organs. You secrete 2x the blood volume you have in your body - needs absorption. We are very efficient in absorbing secretions and the nutrients. Most of the absorption occurs in the small intestine - requires large surface area. Putting folds and hills in the folds increases surface area greatly. This happens without compromising much of the volume it takes up. Entire surface area is equivalent to a tennis court. The meissner"s plexus (submucosal plexus) is found right below the submucosa layer.
