Document Summary

Cortex: contains bowman"s capsules, proximal/distal tubules, afferent arterioles, glomeruli. Renal corpuscle: glomerulus in bowman"s capsule, filters 125 l/min to tubule lumen. Juxtaglomerular apparatus: twists of nephron so ascending limb between arterioles: proximity allows paracrine communication for autoregulation, amount excreted = amount filtered - (amount reabsorbed + amount secreted) Macula densa: epithelium sensing distal tubule flow, release paracrine affecting afferent arteriole diameter. Juxtamedullary: contain vasa recta capillaries that dip into medulla, 20: capillaries very leaky to water (high kuf), contraction/dilation regulates filtration rate. Podocyte: foot processes surrounding capillaries, form slits for filtration. Mesangial cell: cytoplasmic actin bundles to alter blood flow, secrete cytokines: solutes/water filter from glomerular capillary to bowman"s space, very high blood flow to kidney, 25% of cardiac output with 180l filtered per day. Ultrafiltration: water moves from capillary lumen to bowman"s space via starling forces: glomerular capillary 10x more permeable to water than any other in the body.
