Document Summary

Antonio damasio: we are not thinking machines that feel; rather, we are feeling machines that think. A recurring joke regarding psychology was the joke/meme it"s all in your head , essentially writing it off. In the case of personal rejection, our responses are not only wired into our cognitive systems but also into our physiological systems regarding pain. Damasio"s somatic maker hypothesis is intended to explain how people rationally process information: it is theorized that signals within one"s brain in uence human decision making, such as how people prioritize and how logic is applied to situations. Somatic maker hypothesis begins with sensory inputs: inputs result in autonomic arousal, signals of arousal then informs the pre-frontal cortex (pfc) of this arousal. This pathway creates a non-conscious bias that facilitates cognitive processing towards a certain objective, such as sensing danger and/or questioning a thought. Therefore, these subtle physiological and affective reactions are thus key aspects of rational thought.
