Psy100h1 - lecture 11 - thinking and intelligence. Your memory is a monster; you forget-it doesn"t you think you have a memory; but it has you! -john irving. Ebbinghaus memorized nonsense syllables and tested himself on his memory of the syllables. 20 min. later : a little more than 50% recalled. Meaning of words/objects are built on patterns. Have difficulty learning names of people from a different cultures, since there are no patterns. In the beginning of a learning process, there is very little patterns. Generally, people memorize definitions and researchers names first disconnected patterns (if sole way of studying) People who solely memorize perform poorly on questions created through scenarios, compare/contrast, theory vs. definitions (cannot connect the dots) Feature-based learning learning the details (simplistic manner) Knowledge requires us to integrate these learnings. Learning becomes interesting when it starts making sense. Shiffrin & atkinson model of memory (not 100% valid) (diagram) Memory is a combination of different systems.
