Document Summary

Behaviourism = challenged by cognitive revolution -> recognize role that top-down processes play in determining how our motivational systems function. Operant conditioning - rewards -> reduces behaviour because it turns the game into work -> changes the frame/different top-down processes/schema. Reframe -> self-regulatory system works better (not failure of essence/missing fundamental quality, but lack of skillful application) Autonomy and self motivation (how much of yourself = put into goal vs. pressures pointing you to goal - within or without?) Is the will engaged in selection of goal. Extrinsic motivations - external regulation (rewards, punishments) - easy to manipulate. Introjected regulation: partial internalization of reward/punishment; contingent self-esteem, ego-involvement (hard to escape from) = behaviourist way of thinking - turns motivation into performance. I. e. do well on test = ego boost; do terribly = slam (dan dolderman, 2016) Intrinsic - identified and integrated regulation (personal valuation and importance, integration with values, life goals, self-concept, etc. )
