In a given environment, we may report detecting many sensory stimuli (visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, gustatory). Importantly, we are not always accurate in our reports. In certain cases, we may report the perception of stimuli that are not present: late at night, we might strongly believe that we heard a noise made by an intruder in our house. In contrast, rodents are more olfactory animals with relatively less developed vision: our ability to detect stimuli is also affected by response bias. In certain cases, it may be advantageous for organisms to show a bias towards reporting stimuli as present or absent: stimulus present, you think you hear a sound late at night. As a result, you are worried someone is in your home! In most cases, you go and investigate the perceived noise (especially if you have a family). Why: there is high incentive to do so, for two reasons:
