Document Summary
Stress: an unpleasant emotional state that results from perceptions of danger. We are not capable of overcoming this obstacle . Eustress vs. distress: eustress is the positive stress experiences (not worried if you"re capable of dealing with something, more like flight or fight resonse, or riding on a rollar coaster). Same pattern of stresses for different stressors in rats. Alarm stage: fight or flight, stress resistance builds up to prepare: resistance stage: bodily defenses are maximized, blood flow to the limps and important organs. Exhaustion stage: weak body systems are the first to shut down oncet the stress if over. Sam = sympathetic adrenal medulla: hpa = Short term response: sympathetic branch of ans, sends message to adrenal medulla which releases epinephrine and norepinephrine. These work to increase heart rate, perspiration, and blood flow to muscles. Long term response: hypothalamus sends message to anterior pituitary, which sends a message to the adrenal cortex through blood flow.
