Document Summary
Stress: unpleasant emotional state that results from perceptions of danger. From challenges you are excited about, roller coasters, etc. Stressor: an environmental event or stimulus that threatens an organism. Coping response: any response an organism makes to avoid, escape from, or minimize an aversive stimulus. Body organs that were weak before stress are the first to fail. Suppress immune system (reduce inflammation), increase availability of blood sugar. Sympathetic branch of autonomic nervous system (ans) Increased heart rate, perspiration, blood flow to muscles. High blood pressure, heart and kidney failure, more colds (due to weakened immune system, though short-term stress gives short boost) Poor eating habits, lack of sleep, alcohol and drug use, etc. Emotion-focused coping: attempts to prevent emotional response to stressor. More likely when stressors perceived as uncontrollable and stress levels are high. Problem-focused coping: attempts to deal directly with stressor to solve the problem. More likely when stressors are perceived as controllable and stress levels are moderate.
