Document Summary
Psy 100 lecture #3: research methods in psychology. Empirical evidence: data that has been collected. Contrast with some other non scientific ways of forming beliefs about the world. Scientific theories typically explain the relationship between two or more variables. Theories and hypotheses they generate must also be: Falsifiable: it must be possible to make an observation that would show proposition to be false, even if the observation has not yet been made. Under certain circumstances, positive intergroup contact can reduce prejudice toward the outgroup. Social comparison theory: more objective measures are unavailable. Social learning theory: people learn by observing others. Conceptual: dictionary definition, definitions of theoretical constructs that are stated in term of concrete, observable positions. Operational: sometimes variables are not well-defined and cannot be directly observed. Operational: physiological measure (sweating), behavioural measure (eye-contact,fidgeting), self-reported measure (asking them) Types of research methods and subsequent claims behaviour. May lead to claims regarding the frequency of some.
