Social psychology: we are social species relying on one another for survival. Social psychologists study how the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours of individuals are influenced by actual, imagined, or implied presence of others. Longest running study on health and happiness by tracking participants from inner city boston since the 1940s. To waldinger, close and personal relationships is what keeps people healthy and happy. Perceived social isolation > feeling we alone: we are able to live alone though > not get married, live alone. Shares risks of obesity and sedentary lifestyle: most upsetting and stressful, negative time in life is disruption of social relationships. This need to feel connected and belong is hugely important!! Social norms > particularly approved ways of thinking and acting within a particular group. Conformity > altering one opinions or behaviours to match those of others or to match social norms.
