Document Summary
An integral feature of scientific practice is the use of careful observation, measurement, and manipulation of variables. A variable is the object; concept or event being measured. The term research is used very loosely in everyday discourse. Consistency & coherence: measurements cannot contradict each other, comparing different result according to the same measures: operational definitions: statements that describe the procedures (or operations) and specific measures that are used to record observations. Clearly state and describe how one is going to measure and record observations. Convergence: independently come to the same result: valid the degree to which an instrument or procedure actually measures what is claims to measure. Relative to operationalization and marks of objectivity (role of good theory and plausibility reasoning) Instruments of measurement are essential to validity ( Not the same as logical validity: reliable it provides consistent and stable answers across multiple observations and points in time.
