The science of psychology has come a very, very long way over the past few thousand years (sort of) Historically we have physicians, philosophers, people who have different. Psychology is split in the social sciences and natural sciences different funding streams that represent the way the field is structured. Spirits: 20the century central nervous system is the seat of human consciousness. Science has always been contextualized in a larger set of societal/ historical/ political/ ideological/ economic processes: science/psychology is not closed. Is contextualized/driven by the prevailing ideas and times of the time. Theological/religious barriers impeded the progress of physiological sciences (therefore, psychology: direct study of human body was forbidden, doctrines regarding human exemptionalism (therefore, impossible to learn about human functioning through animal studies) Post enlightenment rise of the rational, self-interested human. Deep divide between cognition & emotion (thinking and feeling are fundamentally different things)
