Document Summary

Constructs abstract (something we cannot see, hear or measure using a ruler) Most psychology-based research involved studying constructs (ex; mental processes) Operational definition: specifics how a construct can be measured (ex; intelligence is measured by iq test) Ex; uoft stude(cid:374)ts, (cid:373)ales, fe(cid:373)ales, a(cid:373)eri(cid:272)a(cid:374) (cid:272)o(cid:374)ser(cid:448)ati(cid:448)es et(cid:272) . We study populations by sampling from them we obtain a sample from the population meant to be a representative of a population. We study variables in samples and generalize to the population. Variable is a property/characteristic that changes or has >1 value. Understanding data participants are the rows and variables are the columns (things we measure/manipulate or calculate) We sample populations and study those samples in order to make our best estimates of populations properties. Descriptive statistics: used to summarize and organize sample data. Inferential statistics: allows to analyze characteristics of sample data and generalize findings to the population from which the sample was drawn. Sample 1: 10 cherries, 5 licorice, 20 lime.
