Document Summary

Identity: defining who you are, what you value and direction in life, commitments to vocation, personal relationships, sexual orientation, ethnic group, ideals, exploration, resolution of identity crisis . Role confusion: lack of direction and definition of self, restricted exploration in adolescence, earlier psychosocial conflicts not resolved, society restricts choices, unprepared for stages of adulthood. As a result of overwhelming choices: identity vs role confusion (exploring options, belief systems, attitudes) We either commit to things (identity) or not (role confusion: either not trying to sort out identity, or still unsure) Modern research shows that identity crisis doesn"t occur; it"s a time of exploration, not tumultuous crisis. Low exploration, high commitment identity foreclosure: identity achieved & moratorium info gathering; more open-minded (cid:0) and seek new things, foreclosure & diffusion. Dogmatic, inflexible; there is a certain way the world works, and it can"t change: long-term diffusion. Diffuse, avoidant, don"t really explore and think.
