Document Summary

Psy220 lecture 11: liking, loving, and connecting part 2. Exchange of rewards fulfills the need to master the social environment. Trust people, getting what we want from the world. Exchange for self-disclosures fulfills the need for connectedness with others. Exchange relationship: relationship in which people exchange rewards in order to receive benefits in return. Ex: implicit understanding where what you put into the relationship you will get out of it. Communal relationship: relationship in which people reward their partner out of direct concern and to show caring. Much closer and intimate than exchange relationships. If you desire a closer relationship with someone, you may offer to do something for them without expecting anything in return. Intimacy: positive emotional bond that includes understanding and support; takes time to develop. Created through interactions involving self-disclosure and responsiveness. Feeling understood, valued, and respected by your partner. Self-disclosures: include facts about one"s life and situation, as well as inner thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
