Document Summary
Where altruism = voluntarily helping those in need with no expectation in return. When we help people, we get a good feeling ; helping people is all about us getting the good feeling, not truly to help the person. Helping people reinforces the likelihood of helping others in the future. Why do people help: learning, arousal, norms, behaviourism: helping is the by-product of the individual"s conditioning history. Altruistic behavior is a subset of prosocial behavior. Prosocial behavior is helping someone (?: arousal model: a prominent one is the cost-reward model (dovidio et al. , 1991; piliavin et al. , 1981). Cialdini et al. (1987) negative state relief model : arousal, labeling that arousal with a particular emotion, the label that"s generated is cued by situational features. The reason why i"m helping is to make myself happier : cialdini"s model: when we"re in a negative emotional state, we will alleviate the arousal by helping.
