How we think about ourselves influence our choices and behaviors. Serves as a reference point for how we perceive and interact with others: knowledge of who you are as a person. Personal-social identity continuum- the 2 distinct ways that the self can be. Self-concept- an individual"s knowledge about who she or he is: i am _____________________ , ex. nice, honest, loyal. We do not experience all aspects of our self-concept simultaneously. The identity that is salient at a given moment will influence how we think about ourselves thus influence our behavior. When personal identity is salient result in self-descriptions that emphasize how we are different form others. When group identity is salient emphasize ways we are similar to other group members and what differentiates our group from other groups. Identity is examining how different we are from others. Intragroup comparisons vs intergroup comparisons: intragroup- contrasts within your own group personal identity self- descriptions.
