Document Summary

Week 03: psychoanalytic freud & jung (reading: chapter 3 + supplement) Freud is known for his psychoanalytic approach to understanding personality. The 5 ways that freud is still relevant: The importance of conflict and ambivalence in behaviour. Much of who we are stems from childhood origins. He developed the theory of psychosexual development. He gave the idea of mental representations as a mediator of social behaviour. Stereotyping model behaviour analysis shows people are prejudiced and unaware of it. Freud operated at the start of the 20th century. He treated them for things like hysteria (various mental illnesses with no apparent cause that could only be cured by psychological/social influences), neurosis, etc. Charcot and janet used hypnosis to treat hysteria a process by which a person is induced into a trance state where action is partially under the control of another person.
