Mood: mood disorder = disabling mood disturbance, differs from sadness/happiness on: intensity, duration, impairment, and associated symptoms, mood is not an enduring trait while a mood disorder is (i. e. continues beyond any specific event) African americans: women are suggested to be more susceptible because they ruminate more and have different responses as a result of social norms - women also have less power and status, deal with more violence. In east asia people tend to focus on physical symptoms of depression while in north america tend to focus on mood, and self-esteem. Subtypes of depression: persistent depressive disorder: milder depressed mood for most of the day more days than not for 2 years, premenstrual dysphoric disorder: functional impairment/distress associated with marked monthly mood changes. Cognitive models: diathesis-stress model, diathesis = cognitive vulnerability stress = life events, cognitive vulnerability, negative cognitive triad, negative views of self, world, future.
