Document Summary
Lecture 2: what is abnormal behaviour, statistical criteria. Behaviour that deviates from the statistical norm. Based on data that has been gathered: cultural norms. Norms: ways of expecting to behave, each culture has their norms. Some disorders that are recognized in some cultures and not in others. In islamic, and jewish cultures alcoholism is non existent. Frequency of occurrence changes in cultures: suicide is almost absent in islamic cultures. Some behaviours that all cultures have and recognize: schizophrenia, developmental norms to punishments. Going up to someone and saying you don"t like them and slapping them leads: except when you are a child, and haven"t learned any better. There are developmental norms that we use to help define abnormality. By a certain age/developmental stage you are expected to act in a certain way. Dsm is specific on these three criteria of abnormal behaviour. If it is an outlier at all (usually 1 stdev = abnormal 2 stdev= pathology)
