Not a physical change, the only reason it caught your attention was because it was meaningful to you which was a problem for broadbent"s theory. Attenuation: turning down a signal, the processing value. Two stages to attention: attenuation and the threshold. Threshold is lower even with an attenuating processing value it can still get through. Spotlight metaphor: attention is a shining that makes things more salient. Load theory: attention is relevant to task demands. Tasks are not a property of the physics of the world, the world doesn"t have problems. Attention is a mesh with problem solving capabilities. Treisman feature integration theory: taking features that are initially processed separately and gluing them together in an integrated whole. Everything is inherently goal oriented, the goals are more background and perhaps evolutionary driven no such things as bottom up.
