Document Summary

Three weeks after conception, the embryo is 3 flat layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm. The neural plate is a part of ectodermal tissue, a small patch on the dorsal surface of the embryo. There"s a lot of diff chemical signals that trigger diff waves of development. One of them is: mesoderm sends chemical signals to induce formation of neural plate. Mesoderm is the orchestrator of this phase of the development. The cells of the neural plate are stem cells: Have almost unlimited capacity for self renewal (if treated properly, if in the proper cell culture) Pluripotent (can develop into many, but not all, classes of cells) Totipotent (cell can become any kind of cell) -> pluripotent -> multipotent -> unipotent. When a stem cell divides, two diff cells are created: Cell that develops into some type of body cell. Stem cell cultures will die off bc of random errors in the division process.
