PSY323H1 Lecture : Sex Roles and Behavior.docx
Document Summary
Stereotypes of gender more prescriptive than descriptive. Woman: emotional/sensitive, nurturing, spatially & numerically incompetent, less intelligent than men, physically weak/fragile, vain/catty to each other, obsessed with shopping, submissive/dependent/not leaders, polite/dainty, agreeable, scheming, talkative, cook & clean. Men: arrogant, macho, provider of family, aggressive, sports, dominant, sexually driven (shallow/superficial), non-emotional, predators, practical, handy, in charge (controlling/self-sufficient), ego sensitive, no help, physically strong, can"t express emotions. 75% countries say women are submissive, superstitious and men are adventurous. Sex is biologically rooted so it works biologically (you are either one thing or another). Our social roles dictate the roles that women/men have played. Since women have to take care of children (give birth, breastfeed), they are tied to that role. These characteristics limit the jobs we go into. We have an expectation in society of what jobs people have depending on their gender.
