Document Summary
Structural accounts of emotion: basic emotions, dimensional accounts of the structure of emotion still very contentious between the two accounts. Oatley and johnson-laird structure and functional researchers don"t overlap- typically choose just one. James-lange would agree with basic emotions in that is follows a predictable pattern of physiological response. Distinct/universal built in ways of expressing them i. e. facial expressions should be the same across cultures and experiences; also tone o voice. Evident early in life takes some time for infants to differentiate basic emotions; start with frowning and smiling, then fear becomes distinct from distress, anger takes longer (blaming someone else) Physiologically distinct (including specific brain patterns) not really finding this now assumes 1) we should all be able to experience these emotions 2) our cognitive appraisals, behaviour, and physiology act together and work in a predictable pattern (set patterns of responses)
