A class of phenomenon characterized by good outcomes in spite of serious threats to adaptation or development. The ability to maintain a stable equilibrium in the face of loss or trauma; the ability to resist being damaged or deformed by traumas or destructive forces. The ability to bounce back, recover, or even grow from negative events and emotional experiences. This is a fairly ordinary response, not some magical thing to do well in face of trauma. Examines how individuals actually cope/respond with hardship. Assess patterns of well-being over time to determine who is resilient in the face of stressors. The changing lives of older couples (cloc) study. 205 lost a spouse during the course of the study. Prior to bereavement (on average 3 years pre-loss) At least twice after bereavement (6 and 18 months post-loss) 12% of people did experience some level of depression but then went down to pre-loss levels.
