Optimism without realism is associated with cost. So optimistic you"re not acknowledging what"s really happening in the situation and expecting an outcome that is unlikely to happen. His mindset is to have the long-term faith that everything will work out. He held onto hope that ultimately he"d get out of there, while acknowledging current situation. Realize the reality of the situation but have sense in the long term things will work out. Realistic now and acknowledge the current situation but you believe things will ultimately workout. A is for adversity: any negative event. B is for belief about that negative event - how relevant it is to yourself, etc. C is for consequences: how you feel and behave following the adversity. Key: beliefs can be the cause of a consequence, rather than the negative event itself.
