Document Summary

Plasticity can be seen in animal models: kittens visual cortex & hubel and wiesel experiment. When one eye is shut during development, the other eye takes over: provides better experimental understanding of amblyopia in humans. Brain learns to ignore the (cid:862)laz(cid:455) e(cid:455)e(cid:863) There is a sensitive period for this to occur-leads to blindness in that one eye if left untreated. Fairly common in children, seen during eye muscle development: strength and diversity of neural connections can be seen in rat models. Rich vs. boring environment: plasticity can also occur in body cells. Fetal frog belly cells transplanted onto mouth region. When done in salamander-frog belly to salamander mouth leads to frog. Breast feeding is generally best, but there are many challenges, and fed is always best: breast (cid:373)ilk has to(cid:374)s of a(cid:374)ti(cid:271)odies a(cid:374)d good (cid:374)utrie(cid:374)ts (cid:271)ut (cid:373)a(cid:374)(cid:455) (cid:373)others are(cid:374)"t able to produce enough breast milk. Motor development: milestones are the general timeline of skill acquisition.
