Document Summary

Though it is normal for cognitions to slow down with age. Mistaken attitude/perception: older adults become stubborn, irritable, bossy behaviour: ignore, ostracize, mistreat elderly. Self-reported satisfaction: increased positive relationships and mastery less personal growth. Integrity vs despair significant increase in integrity. Significant increase in despair could be because of a psychopathology. Conflicted feelings particularly about past events. If locked in this stage this leads to a psychopathology. The person who is grieving is difficult to communicate with. Sometimes bargain is made with a higher power. The grieving person is beginning to understand. Probably spend a lot of time crying and grieving. Not recommended to try and cheer someone up in this stage (grieving process) Comes to term with mortality or other tragic event. These 5 components are still very accepted, but the progression aspect from stage to stage is not well accepted. Mini mental state examination (mmse) quick, widely used test for mental function.
