Lecture 4 People have diff defense mechanisms when they are given negative info eg denial o Eg toxic spills and women being recommended to not breast feed disbelieving the doctorsNot intentionally being bad parents they just do not believe itTheory of Environmental Turbulence AdelsteinIncubationexposure to infoenvtal turbulence Incubation everyday lifeExposure to the info o People situate on attitudinal stance Am I on board Am I a skeptic Am I on the fence o Diversity of responses on this scale of attitudesget splits in the communityo Get people rejecting the info accepting the info and people who are unsureo The relationship comes from skeptics and people who are on boardget conflicts Its not a unidirectional processHave changes taken up by diff segments of societyo Before exposure to info it is a neutral community o Then a conversation ensuesantagonistic relationship evolves win the communityGet environmental turbulenceo Taken a stable community and broke it upreorganized ito Change the way people relate to each other o Organized groups form from this destructive processon either side of the spectrumThere is a middle layer of psychological interpretation o As you go through the process of giving people info and getting their reactions you interpret the responses o Evaluate the complexity of infotoo complex less likely to accept ito Peoples ego defenses must also be evaluatedneed to get over it in order to have the idea taken up by the community Construal Level TheoryLooks at the psychological distance vs closeness info that is further from us has less impactThe way we process info is first of all intuitive and only secondly is it consciousPeople receive info of some kindjust saying it is negative info and it is negatively valenced o Implicit processes already reject it o Implicit processes drive our more explicit processes how we feel guides how we thinkThe emotional reaction people initially have to the info sets the stage for the next things that comeonce you evoke the emotional response it shifts the way we process thingsTheory of Envtal Turbulence ContdThe skeptics and the believers dont like each other they devalue each others infoBut the believers are not always right there is no moral structure to this community division People think rationally but feel intuitively and the feelings usually winThe feelings happen first Theres a big difference bt giving people info and connecting with themo If you want info to actually connect with people things like lecturing isnt going to worko Need an experiential relationshipThe need to get across negative info is a huge problemo If you want to get the people in the middle to agree with you and you look for something they will connect with a negative emotion you will lose them
