Deviance: any behavior that is thought to violate a widely held norm. Social norm: a rule, guide, or standard that establishes what is considered culturally desirable and appropriate community. Deviance includes all the behaviors that people disapprove of, ranging from committing murder to burping loudly. In social life, most rules and controls are largely invisible. Most people want to do the right thing. People base their opinions of themselves largely on how they believe other people view them: so they feel punished when other people disapprove. However, most social norms are informal and unspoken. Guilt and the generalized other: george herbert mead: people learn views of the generalized other in childhood, well socialized people can feel guilt or shame if they sense they have broken the rules. Informal social control silently punishes the rule breaker and rewards the conformist with esteem, trust, and cooperation.
