Necessary that the rules of practice are standardized because this creates rigorous and reproducible work. Ex: how many people in the room, 1 answer only, not interesting because not complicated. Social problem worthy of consideration are dictated by context. Why people lie in online dating *concern is bias* What requires defining before question can be tackled. What concerns do you have about our ability to answer this question. Quantitative: technique in which researchers collect and report data numerically. Advantage: allow scientists to model relationships and calculate statistics. Disadvantage: require high volume of responses, and can miss descriptive nuance. Usually answering research questions that start w/ what, will, and/or, Qualitative: technique in which researchers collect and report data using thick description. Advantage: descriptive, rich and detailed; gives us important information about the inner workings of the social world.
